Frank Scherer will not run for re-election as Landrat
In a surprising announcement, Landrat Frank Scherer revealed that he will not seek a third term as Landrat of Ortenaukreis. Scherer made this announcement during a meeting with his colleagues in the administration, Ortenau Klinikum, and the businesses of the district as well as the Kreisräte on January 9, 2024. Scherer provided a personal statement explaining his decision and his reasons for not running for re-election.
“I have decided around the turn of the year that I will not seek a third term as Landrat of Ortenaukreis after 16 years. I believe that the years of my tenure have been good for the district and for me personally. I have had a diverse and challenging role, and the district has had a Landrat who has given his all for it. Now it is time for something new, as I believe that a change will be beneficial for Ortenaukreis – and for me as well.”
Reasons behind the decision
Frank Scherer highlighted several factors that influenced his decision. Firstly, he mentioned that democracy is based on political positions with limited terms and that 16 years is a substantial amount of time. He noted that those who will be able to vote in the upcoming municipal elections on June 9 have only known him as the Landrat of Ortenaukreis. Additionally, Scherer emphasized that 16 years is a significant portion of his entire professional life.

Scherer also stated that his decision was driven by a desire to bring new, fresh energy to the district. By stepping down, he believes that the district will benefit from a younger perspective and he will have the opportunity to embark on new professional challenges.
An emotional decision
While Scherer acknowledged the rational aspects of his decision, he also shared the emotional side of his thought process. Leaving behind his colleagues in the Landratsamt, Ortenau Klinikum, and the district’s businesses was a difficult part of his decision-making process. Scherer expressed his admiration for the exceptional teamwork and overall organizational culture that has been fostered during his tenure. He hopes that his colleagues understand his decision and the reasoning behind it.
“Given that a Landratsamt is not a family business but a partially politically guided authority with a temporarily elected head, I ultimately had to prioritize the emotional aspect of my decision, no matter how difficult it was for me. I hope that my colleagues can understand this.”
Frank Scherer’s decision not to run for re-election brings an end to his 16-year tenure as Landrat of Ortenaukreis. While the announcement came as a surprise, Scherer emphasized the positive experiences and achievements during his time in office. As he steps down, the district prepares for a new chapter with fresh leadership and the opportunity for further growth and success.
