Achern invests in flood protection

Achern, a city in Baden-Württemberg, is currently undertaking extensive construction measures along the Acher river to protect against flooding and ensure a good ecological state. The project, which is being carried out by the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Achern, aims to achieve the central goals of flood protection and maintaining a healthy ecological balance.

Significance of the project

The construction work along the Acher river is an important investment for the city of Achern. The focus of the 17 million euro investment is the stretch between the Gamshurst A5 entrance and the bridge at Serverinstraße in the industrial park. By widening the riverbed and raising the dykes, the Acher’s capacity to handle water will be increased, thus reducing the risk of flooding for the nearby industrial park and parts of Gamshurst.

“The importance of these renovations lies in the fact that the industrial park and parts of Gamshurst will no longer be in the hazard zone of a 100-year flood,” emphasizes Mayor Manuel Tabor.

The project not only ensures safety but also enhances the ecological value of the Acher river. Through targeted construction measures, deep spots in the river will be maintained even during periods of low water. This is crucial for the fish population, ensuring they have sufficient water even during dry spells.

Government support and benefits

The state of Baden-Württemberg has provided significant support for the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive along the Acher river. Through subsidies ranging from 80% to 90%, the state has created a favorable funding environment for these important measures. Without this support, many cities and municipalities would struggle to meet the financial requirements.

“The state deserves praise for its generous assistance with these ongoing municipal projects related to the implementation of the European Water Framework Directive along the Acher river,” Mayor Tabor acknowledges.

Promising future investments

During the visit, Mayor Tabor also showcased another upcoming investment, this time in the cultural sector. The city is currently transforming the former Illenau Hospital into the Illenau Cultural and Conference Center. The former church, which was temporarily used as a cinema by the French occupation, is being converted into a 300-seat event space. Additionally, other rooms will be created to meet various needs, including those of the Achern-Oberkirch music school.

“With the cultural forum, the revitalization of the Illenau receives its crowning achievement. Today’s visit convinces me that the entire region’s residents will have an excellent place to experience art and culture,” expresses Bernd Mettenleiter, a Member of Parliament, eagerly anticipating the opening in the second half of 2024.
