Remembering Ursula Ehler: A Celebrated Playwright and Partner of Tankred Dorst
German playwright Ursula Ehler, who was known for her exceptional contributions to the world of theater, has passed away. Born in Bamberg, Ehler embarked on a career filled with creativity and collaboration.
A Journey of Artistic Pursuits
After studying sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, Ehler’s talents guided her towards the realm of literature and theater. In addition to her work as a librarian at the Bavarian State Library, she also became involved with the Marionettenstudio “Kleines Spiel” in Munich.
A Creative Partnership
During her career, Ehler collaborated extensively with the renowned playwright Tankred Dorst, who was one of the most frequently performed authors in German-speaking theaters. Their creative synergy began in 1971 when they started working together as co-authors. This partnership extended beyond the realm of writing, as Ehler also supported Dorst in his directorial undertaking of “Der Ring des Nibelungen” at the Bayreuth Festival from 2006 to 2010.
An Enduring Union
Not only did their artistic collaboration thrive, but Ehler and Dorst’s relationship blossomed into a lasting marriage. They remained devoted partners until Dorst’s passing in 2017.
