Sachsen bekommt eine neue Jugendherberge

Sachsen is set to have a new youth hostel with the construction of a new facility at the Markkleeberger See in the Leipzig district. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on Thursday, with Markkleeberg’s mayor, Karsten Schütze (SPD), and the district administrator of Leipzig, Henry Graichen (CDU), in attendance. The project is being supported with a funding of 16 million euros from the federal and state governments.

The new youth hostel, expected to be completed by 2026, will offer 170 beds and various amenities. These include a cafeteria with a terrace, an orchard, a barbecue area, sports facilities such as playgrounds, table tennis and bocce courts, seating steps, parking spots for cars and bicycles, as well as mooring facilities for boats. The intention is to attract guests with a focus on sports activities. The target groups for the youth hostel are expected to be school classes, sports groups, and families.

Funding and Growth in the Region

The funding of approximately 16 million euros for the construction of the youth hostel comes from sources such as the structural transformation investment fund for coal regions. This project is one of the six tourism infrastructure initiatives supported in the Central German Mining Region. The Leipzig Neuseenland is a growing region, and the addition of the new youth hostel aligns with the development and increasing visitor demand in the area.

Existing Youth Hostels in Sachsen

The State Association of Sachsen of the German Youth Hostel Association currently operates 23 youth hostels, providing over 3,000 beds. With a target of 365,000 overnight stays in the previous year, the association has a significant role in accommodating visitors to the region. Once completed, the new facility in Markkleeberg will also be operated by the State Association of Sachsen.
