This large, luxurious, and highly detailed replica of a Black Forest farmstead by award-winning clockmaker August Schwer is one of the finest executions of its kind available today. The myriad details that have gone into its construction and the excellence of craftsmanship make this cuckoo clock outstanding on all fronts. The old forest farmhouse (or estate, as it is sometimes called) has maintained its own distinct identity for centuries. Early generations of farmers took pride in constructing lodgings for their families and livestock that would give maximum comfort and protection to them. As time went by, modern building techniques were introduced, but the basic features of the Black Forest chalet remain unique, and have been the driving inspiration for the design of thousands of Black Forest cuckoo clocks.

This model brilliantly captures these features through the many scenes displayed on its wide and detailed clock front. The frame of the house with its annexes on both sides speaks of forest families that expanded over generations, creating a need for extra living space. This is one of the few cuckoo clocks that has an extended balcony area, just like in old farmhouses where it was built to store extra fodder for farm animals. The low, sloping roof on this miniature chalet, with its chimney stack and individually carved shingles, is an authentic representation of the style of roofing resorted to by farmers to insulate their families and houses from the effects of harsh seasonal winds and snow. The fire-bell tower visible on top used to be a familiar sight on old farmhouses since a bell was necessary to summon distant neighbors in case of fires or other emergencies. The mill wheel to the left of the clock is another typical and vital part of the old farmstead as it was essential for the grinding of corn or sawing of timber.

The clock also highlights the revered clock seller who has gone down in history as one of the earliest promoters of cuckoo clocks. Hundreds of years ago, farmers in the Black Forest made these timepieces during wintertime as a means of earning some extra money, and peddlers trekked throughout Europe with these clocks on their backs during spring and summer, increasing their popularity and the farmers’ incomes–that’s why the clock seller holds a place of prominence on many cuckoo clocks today.

The base is completely embellished with carvings of a farmhouse exterior and its surroundings, providing a refreshing forest ambiance The clock seller and his dog, and figurine of a farmworker in traditional costume are featured amidst greenery like three-dimensional trees, woodland shrubs, fences, a drinking trough, pails, and other implements to recreate the busy yet cheerful atmosphere of life in and around a typical farmhouse. Whenever the clock strikes the hour, the lovely little figurines on the balcony revolve and the mill wheel gently rotates to the lively strains of the music box, adding vitality to this classic timepiece.
